"These pieces are so much fun to make!" I find myself saying it all the time and it's true!

I love it when people tell me that my art makes them smile. I started making recycled assemblage pieces for my first art show in July 2011 more out of a desire to find a new way to express my creative self than from any clear artistic direction. But something with them clicked, and they soon took over my dreams and my every waking thought. I have a constant "buzz" in my head of new ideas rising to the surface and demanding attention -- maybe that explains all the bug pieces?  Sometimes I sketch my ideas out just to clear my head or I just sit down at my worktable and start putting materials together, trying to find the pieces to a puzzle that I can only see the barest outlines of.

I’m a self- taught artist and art has been a part of my life for as long as I can recall. I’ve worked in many different mediums; water colors, oil and acrylic paints, pastels, pen & ink, pencil drawings and paper. I'd always considered myself a painter, but assemblage feels much more natural to me.  The way these pieces flow out of me made me realize just how much effort I've always had to put into my other artistic endeavors and how much more joyful it is to work in this medium.

I pull ideas from every aspect of my life, but the strongest influences come from the recycled materials themselves. A shape, a color, or just the speckles of patina can be the trigger for an entire piece. A rusted bit of steel becomes a robot's arm or a bird's wing.  Typewriter striker arms become the snakes of the Medusa's hair. I love sensing the age and history of materials that have moved through time and space to end up in one of my pieces, I love breathing new life into things that have been discarded and forgotten.

I've always lived very close to my art, and feel unbelievably lucky to be able to spend so much of my time dreaming, building and creating.
